Maybe you’re like me and sometimes you get this pent up creative energy that can only be satisfied by a good old fashion cat meme—your own. One of the best ways I’ve found to make cat memes and post them to Pinterest and other social media is by using Canva. Canva is a design tool that is free to use, just sign up for it at canva.com. Canva also comes with a Pro Version that’s pretty inexpensive and gives you some more options. You’ll want to get the Pro Version. You can try the Pro Version out for free.

Watch this short 15-minute video to learn the basics of making cat memes in Canva.

Written Steps for Creating a Cat Meme:

  • Go to Canva.com and sign up for a free membership. You can also try the Pro Version for free. (You’ll probably want to do that!)

  • On your home page, go to the upper right corner and click “Create Design.”

  • In the search box enter “Pinterest.” Choose “Pinterest Pin 1000 x 1500 px.”

  • This will create a Pinterest-sized design canvas to you to work on.

I always start memes from a photo. On the left hand side click on Elements

Click on “Photos”

Enter in the search box “funny cat pictures.” This will bring up many photos. Scroll through them and see what you like.

Click on a photo you like and it will appear on the design canvas. To get rid of a photo, click on it and hit the “garbage can” icon.

Adjust the size of the photo by pulling out or in on the corners.

Now you can click on “Edit” in the top menu. There are a lot of options for editing for you to explore. Under “Tool” on the left side you will see the “BG Remover.” This will remove background of photos. Click on the photo and then click on “BG remover.” And there you are we’re ready to put a colored background in back of the cat

To add the background. Click on the background and then you’ll see a color box on the top menu. This is where you can pick the color you want to use. Towards the bottom of the color boxes there is a section of colors that are taken from th picture. I clicked on the red color box. I think it looks great!

Next you will want to type in your meme text. On the left hand side, click on the big T - text and then add a text box, or headings. Click on “Add a heading” and a heading will appear on the canvas. The top menu bar shows you everything you can use to modify it, including changing the font and the size of the font. The big A is where you can change the color of the front. Highlight the text and click on the big A to change the color. You can also change the alignment and do a lot of other things with this menu. Take some time to explore.

Now that your text is done you might like to place another photo in your design to make it pop. Once again, click on “Elements” then “Photos.” Then in the search bar type in popcorn and it will bring up a of yummy looking popcorn photos Click on the photo you like and it will appear on the canvas. Once again, adjust the size and location of the photo. Quite cute!

After you are through designing you’ll want to download the meme to your computer. Click on the “Share” button on the right. This will bring up a panel, click on “Download” and “Download” once again. You’ll be able to save it to your hard drive and upload to Pinterest to create a pin.

Here’s the finished product. Be sure to watch the video if you need visual help with this and Canva has many great videos to help you out.
